The Incident
A non-profit organization providing mental health and substance abuse treatment services was targeted by the Abyss ransomware variant. The attack encrypted servers and workstations across the organization, bringing operations to a halt.
But encryption was only part of the damage. Before locking the systems, the threat actor exfiltrated over 500 GB of sensitive data, comprising more than 1 million documents, including protected health information for tens of thousands of individuals.
The likely point of entry was a misconfigured SonicWall SMA appliance. A single vulnerability in an edge device gave the attacker everything they needed.
The Response
Converge activated immediately. Panel vendor SureFire Cyber was engaged to restore encrypted systems and conduct a full digital forensics investigation. While SureFire worked on system recovery, a separate workstream focused on the exfiltrated data.
The data mining effort was massive. Over 1 million documents were reviewed to determine exactly whose information had been compromised. The review identified nearly 54,000 individuals who needed to be notified and offered credit monitoring services. Converge coordinated the entire notification process, working with panel vendors across forensics, legal counsel, and credit monitoring.
The threat actor's ransom demand came in at $1.28 million. Because the insured had maintained adequate, clean backups that were not impacted by the attack, the decision was straightforward: do not pay. The ransom went unpaid.
Converge also handled the regulatory side. When HHS/OCR opened an inquiry due to the volume of individuals affected, the team responded on behalf of the insured.
The Outcome
All systems were restored from backups without paying the ransom. 54,000 individuals were notified and provided credit monitoring. The HHS/OCR regulatory inquiry was addressed.
The matter is not fully closed. Multiple class actions have been filed in state court, and Converge is currently defending them on behalf of the insured. Total claim cost stands at $400,000 and continues to grow as litigation proceeds.
Key Takeaway
Clean, tested backups turned a $1.28M ransom demand into $0 paid. But backups alone did not prevent the breach, the data exfiltration, or the regulatory and legal fallout that followed. Configuration and vulnerability management on edge devices like VPN appliances and remote access tools are just as critical as your backup strategy.
